History from the Emerald Isle

As of recently I've been trying to find out more about the history of the Carney family. I'm interested in where we came from in Ireland. From what little I've found on the internet is that the Carney family is from County Meath. Any other information would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to learn as much as I can so when I go over to Ireland next year I can possibly see some Carney family history etc. while I'm there.

Actualy the Carney family did not come from Meath. Both your great grandmother and your great grandfather came from Achill Island which is part of County Mayo. Mary Carney (nee Dever) came from the village of Ashleam and Michael Carney came from Salia. We just came back from Ireland. We saw both the old Carney home and the Dever home. The Carney home is in ruins. It was abandoned when Michael Carney left Ireland. If you go back let me know and I will try to find you some contacts. Most of our relatives have emigrated to America or England or have died. I saw just one cousin when I was there. Nobody is at home now. If you go back in the summer, you'll more likely find someone home on their holidays.

Mom don't forget to tell the lore about how everyone from Achill Island comes from one of two lines...what are the two guys names?
Also its interesting how people felt about those who speak good Irish or not. I never knew that.
