Remembering Grandma Carney
Posted by Mary Bridget on Fri January 14th 2005, 2:23 pm

Grandma had soft, silky, snowy hair that she wore gently pulled back that showed off her rouged cheeks. I remember that she wore glasses and flowy dresses. I was fascinated with the fact that she wore dentures too.

I remember visiting Grandma Carney at her apartment in downtown Cleveland. I loved the drive to downtown and I always looked forward to seeing the huge painted mural of people sitting on a bench waiting for the bus on a brick building. Her apartment building seemed very tall to me and the buzzer system to be let in was quite other wordly for this suburban girl. Her apartment seemed very small. Grandma would give me tea with milk and sugar. I never had this at home but it tasted very good.

Once Grandma tried to teach me how to knit. I think she was pretty frustrated with my slow progress. I remember doing a few rows and showing it to Grandma. She scanned my work, found an error and ripped all my knitting back! I was horrified! All that work! I have since learned to knit (when I was 27), but have never been able to knit as beautifully as her.

On one St. Patrick's Day I was in the parade on a Cleveland Hopkins Airport float in my "borrowed" Irish Dancing Costume. Afterwards, I danced for a group of the residents from Grandma's building in their community room. I remember Grandma introducing me to all her friends.
